Quick answer: Any system that accepts player input will eventually receive slurs, NSFW screenshots, threats, and worse. Build a moderation pipeline with automated flagging, a quarantine dashboard that only trusted team members can view, documented retention policies, and a CSAM response procedure before you need it.

This is the article nobody wants to write and every game team eventually needs to read. If your game accepts player input — text, images, logs, screenshots, or file uploads — you will one day open your bug tracker and see something upsetting. A slur. A nude screenshot someone sent as a "prank." A threat. Something worse. The first time it happens is a shock. The tenth time it is a process. Building that process before you need it protects your team, your players, and your legal standing. Here is how to think about it.

Know What You Will Actually Receive

The range of inappropriate content in bug reports is broader than most developers expect:

Most of these are rare. CSAM is extremely rare but not unheard of on any platform with image upload. You cannot prevent bad content from arriving; you can only prevent it from staying and from harming your team while it is there.

Step 1: Automated Flagging

Run every incoming report through an automated content filter. The goal is not to be 100% accurate — it is to triage. Anything the filter flags goes to a quarantine queue instead of the main bug dashboard.

For text, a basic approach:

For images, use a commercial safe-search API (AWS Rekognition, Google Vision SafeSearch, or an open-source NSFW classifier) and check every uploaded screenshot:

A score threshold of 0.85 catches most explicit content without too many false positives. Tune based on your audience and game rating.

Step 2: Quarantine, Don't Delete

Flagged reports go to a separate "Quarantine" view that only specific team members can access. They do not appear in the main bug dashboard, they do not generate notifications, and they are not counted in public-facing metrics.

Step 3: Restrict Who Can See It

Step 4: Have a CSAM Response Procedure Before You Need It

This is the hardest and most important part of the article to write. CSAM stands for child sexual abuse material. If it appears in your system, you have legal obligations in most jurisdictions.

The procedure (US-centric; check your local laws):

  1. Stop viewing. Do not take additional screenshots, do not share, do not discuss in chat channels.
  2. Preserve the evidence. Do not delete. Restrict access to a single person who will handle the report.
  3. Report to NCMEC. In the US, file a report via report.cybertip.org (the NCMEC CyberTipline). This is a legal requirement for "electronic communication service providers" and a moral one regardless.
  4. Follow NCMEC's guidance on retention and deletion. They will tell you when and how to destroy the material.
  5. Document the incident internally (what happened, when, who handled it, when NCMEC was notified) for audit purposes.

International teams should consult their own country's child protection reporting procedures (UK: IWF; Canada: Cybertip.ca; EU: INHOPE members). The common thread is: do not delete, do not share, report to the designated authority immediately.

Step 5: Ban the Reporter (When Appropriate)

For harassment and deliberately abusive reports, you can and should ban the reporter from your game if you have the ability. Tie the bug report to a player account, log the ban reason, and make sure your ban system is auditable.

The tricky case is a bug report that contains slurs targeting a real person (not just generic hate speech). Treat this as directed harassment and act accordingly even if the language alone would not trigger a ban — context matters. Document your reasoning.

Step 6: Protect Your Team's Mental Health

Moderation work is psychologically costly. If you are doing it regularly, even at an indie scale, do these things:
