Quick answer: Try the other backend via launch flags, update drivers, and for servers run the true headless/dummy driver instead of expecting a GPU.
The engine asked the OS for a rendering context and got nothing. Players hit it on broken drivers; developers hit it in CI and servers. The fixes differ. Here they are.
How to fix it
1. Switch backends from the command line
Launch with --rendering-driver opengl3 (or set the Compatibility renderer) to bypass a broken Vulkan stack — if that works, it is a Vulkan driver problem on that machine.
2. Update or reinstall GPU drivers
For players, a clean driver reinstall fixes most cases; integrated GPUs on old laptops may simply cap at the Compatibility renderer.
3. Run servers headless
Dedicated servers and CI should run the headless build or --headless — initializing video on a GPU-less box is the error working as designed.
4. Detect and message it
Wrap launch in a small launcher or script that catches the failure and shows driver-update guidance, instead of the raw engine dialog.
Catching the ones you can't reproduce
