Python's recursion limit (around a thousand frames) converts infinite or merely deep recursion into this error. Games hit it with map algorithms and accidental self-reference. Here is both cures.

How to fix it

1. Convert flood fills to a stack

Recursive flood fill dies on any decent-sized map: stack = [start], loop popping cells, pushing unvisited neighbors — same algorithm, no depth limit.

2. Track visited state

Graph walks (rooms, nav nodes) recurse forever on cycles without a visited set — add if node in visited: return before recursing.

3. Check the traceback's repeating pair

The repeated frames name the cycle — a() → b() → a() mutual recursion, or a property whose getter reads itself (@property def x(self): return self.x — the classic typo for self._x).

4. Raising the limit is not the fix

sys.setrecursionlimit(10000) trades this error for a hard interpreter crash — restructure instead; iterative versions are also faster.
